TSA Technical Series: Part 9 Structural Systems (Part 2)

While gravity is the most obvious force at play in a building’s structure, equally important and potentially more consequential to its design is resistance to lateral loads.

Join us and Jake Greenhow of Blackwell for a special two-part lecture series for architectural professionals focusing on the structural systems and limitations of buildings under Part 9 of the Ontario Building Code (Housing and Small Buildings).

For our second session, we’ll be focusing on lateral systems (i.e., resistance against wind and seismic loading) and recent relevant building code updates to Part 9. Topics will include:

• Basic levels of lateral load distribution in a building
• Changes from OBC 2012 to OBC 2024
• The Part 9 prescriptive lateral approach (OBC 9.23.13)
• Proposed changes coming to National Building Code of Canada 2025
• Design considerations for enhanced lateral performance

By attending this lecture, architects will gain a better understanding of best practices regarding the lateral systems in light-wood framed structures and how to mitigate the need for steel frames, as well as what the changes to Part 9 of the OBC mean for you and your practice.

Part one of this lecture series, TSA Technical Series: Part 9 Structural Systems (Part 1), will include a review of all things structural in Part 9, other than lateral systems. Please note that attendees do not need to have attended part one to gain a full understanding of the topics shared in this session.
